overview
This flagship store translates YOKO CHAN's aesthetic of eliminating ornamentation and highlighting the inner self and body of the wearer into a tangible space. Located a step away from the hustle and bustle of Roppongi, it aims to be a tranquil space where visitors can be freed from the noise of information and confront their own bodies and senses.
In addition to sculptural forms and softly curved plaster walls, the designer personally visited the production areas to find veneer and chunks of cedar root that had long been stored in warehouses, which were then used for symbolic fixtures. The flowing curves created by the stone and wood grains are derived from the inner beauty of women, which the brand cherishes.
Issues/requests
The planned site was a room in an office building not originally intended for retail use, and therefore had the physical constraint of low ceilings. The main challenge was how to overcome this obstacle while creating a "serene and immersive atmosphere" befitting the brand's prestige.
Having designed the flagship store approximately 10 years ago, the expectation for this relocation was to respect the company's past achievements while proposing a sustainable space that would support further growth. This project strongly demanded a design that leveraged the accumulated history rather than simply being a scrap-and-build project.
solution
In this design, we deliberately abandoned the signage effect of a street-level shop and instead took advantage of the enclosed nature and low ceilings of a room in an old multi-tenant building to create an immersive space isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city.
In sourcing materials, the designer personally visited production areas and unearthed dead stock of cedar roots and veneers. By arranging these as sculptural elements, the brand's pure and uncompromising spirit is materialized. Furthermore, by designing with future relocation in mind and incorporating reuse as a premise, the design transcends temporary interiors, achieving a lasting coexistence between the brand and the space.
