overview
Located in Tokyo's Yaesu district, a hub for people from both Japan and abroad with diverse purposes, this building was designed not merely as an information center, but as a "landmark (or starting point) for travelers." By using Tama-grown timber and incorporating design elements reminiscent of Edo culture, we created a space that embodies "Old meets New."
Our aim is not only to efficiently provide tourist information, but also to stimulate visitors' interest and curiosity, and to inspire them to travel. Located in Yaesu, an international gateway, this tourist information hub encourages encounters with the multifaceted charms of Tokyo.
Issues/requests
To meet the diverse needs of travelers from both within Japan and overseas, and to provide effective and easy-to-understand tourist information about Tokyo and various parts of Japan, as well as to introduce new tourist information functions utilizing advanced technology, it was necessary to create a tourist hub that would promote travel throughout Tokyo.
solution
Creating a symbol to attract visitors
A large lantern has been installed as a symbol of the facility. By placing it directly in front of the entrance, it is intended to attract the attention of visitors and passersby, drawing them into the facility. In addition, images expressing the culture and seasonal charms of Tokyo are projected onto the lantern, conveying the unique character of Tokyo.
Disseminating tourism information through digital content
We introduced digital signage that primarily showcases the charms of Tokyo through visuals, providing travelers without a specific destination with opportunities for new discoveries. The intuitively designed information conveys the appeal of Tokyo to a wide range of users, both domestic and international.
○ Promoting travel through "travel lottery"
We've installed a drawer shaped like a map of Japan where you can draw a "travel lottery ticket" containing hints about your destination. Based on the concept of "Find Your +1," we aim to create serendipitous encounters with regions and cultures that users might not otherwise discover. Furthermore, by creating connections to new travel destinations, we hope to promote travel starting from Tokyo.
〇 Spatial design that evokes Edo culture
We designed a space that combines warmth and a distinctly Tokyo feel by incorporating traditional Edo-era colors into a wood-based design. Furthermore, by installing a traditional Japanese curtain (noren) at the entrance, we aimed to create a tourist information center that would easily convey Edo culture to international visitors.
Customer's voice
In a warm and inviting space that evokes the atmosphere of Edo, we have effectively utilized digital content to create a hub that clearly communicates the charm of Tokyo. As an information center that harmoniously blends tradition and innovation, we believe it is stimulating the interest of visitors from both Japan and abroad and encouraging them to explore various parts of Tokyo.
