overview

Shizuoka City Museum of History is the city's first comprehensive history museum, with the aim of communicating the historical value and appeal of Shizuoka City, conveying history to citizens in greater depth, and cultivating a love for the hometown in children, under the theme of "Learn about Shizuoka's past, understand the present, and think about the future." Our company was involved from the basic planning stage, and was in charge of displays design and construction of the gallery on the first floor and the permanent displays rooms on the second and third floors.

Issues/requests

As a core base for the ``City of History and Culture'' set forth in the 3rd Shizuoka City Comprehensive Plan, we would like to create a museum that conveys the charm of Shizuoka City's history and culture, centered around two military commanders, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Imagawa Yoshimoto. . At the same time, there was a request to create a facility that would contribute to the revitalization of the local economy through tourism exchange and other activities.

solution

From the perspective of promoting tourism, at the beginning of the project, we conducted interviews with a wide range of citizens, including the local chamber of commerce, local NPOs, and local history research groups, and reflected these in the planning. In addition, during the design process, we were conscious of creating a seamless displays design that would give a sense of "now and future" while placing importance on history in line with the architectural design. Specifically, we used large-scale video footage shot in super high resolution and life-size to speak to visitors from their perspective, designed transparent cases to highlight displays materials in line with the museum's policy of "operating displays using borrowed items such as national treasures and important cultural properties," and created a city model from the 1950s using photographs and maps collected from citizens.

Customer's voice

We have received comments such as the following from visitors.

・When I learned that Sunpu was very prosperous during the Imagawa, Ieyasu, and early Meiji periods, I became proud of it as a citizen.
・There were more sights to see than I had imagined. I learned about Shizuoka's past and felt the message that it is connected to the present. It gave me something to talk about with my son, an elementary school student, who was visiting the museum with me, and it made me feel proud as a person living in Shizuoka.
