RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka Vignette Collection
overview
The prestigious Rihga Royal Hotel Osaka, which boasts a 90-year history and has been loved by many guests including state guests and members of the Imperial Family as "Osaka's guesthouse," has grandly reopened as "Rihga Royal Hotel Osaka Vignette Collection" by introducing "Vignette Collection," one of the brands of IHG Hotels & Resorts, in anticipation of the opening of the Osaka-Kansai Expo in April 2025. Inheriting the hotel's history and identity, and blending it with the charm of the beautiful scenery surrounding it, unique to the city of water, it has been reborn as a space that will be loved for generations to come.
For this renovation, our company handled concept design of the entrance, reception, public areas, guest rooms, banquet halls, and gym, as well as working drawings and construction of the guest room area, art, and FF&E (furniture, entertainment, and amenities).
Issues/requests
・Incorporate the charm of the Nakanoshima area, which is surrounded by rivers
・The plan makes use of the existing building, designed by architect Isohachi Yoshida, which incorporates "traditional Japanese beauty."
・Relieve congestion in waiting lines at the reception counter
・Ensure the necessary number of waiting seats in the lobby and lounge
・Renovation work will be carried out simultaneously while the hotel remains open, with approximately 1,000 guest rooms being renovated.
We have received the above request.
solution
By deepening our relationship with "water" in Nakanoshima, an island surrounded by rivers that have had a significant impact on people's lives and the development of culture, we are creating a unique hotel space and generating new experiential value based on the concept of "the fusion of traditional beauty and water."
At the reception, guests are greeted by a folding screen made of Nishijin-ori textile, mounted on the wall opposite the entrance. concept design intention was to combine the original meaning of a folding screen—to welcome guests with respect for their feelings—with the hotel's spirit of hospitality. As concept design unique to folding screens, the traditional technique of "fukurashi-ori" (raised weaving) was boldly applied to express the dynamic and majestic movement of water. In addition, by setting back the reception counter from its existing position, a waiting area was secured, creating a spacious environment for smoothly welcoming and accommodating hotel guests.
Furthermore, we have added sofas to the lobby area to allow guests to relax and enjoy a luxurious time while admiring the garden.
In the guest rooms' bedrooms, calligraphy, a representative art form of Japan, is used to express the power of water, the driving force behind the cultural development of this region, through the movement, strength, and three-dimensionality of the water's surface using varying shades of ink. Furthermore, the color scheme that makes up the space is based on the hotel's corporate color, royal green, and by utilizing existing designs such as moldings and fixtures that incorporate Western classical styles, a dignified space that inherits history has been realized.
In this large-scale renovation of approximately 1,000 guest rooms, we placed great emphasis on understanding the existing facilities beforehand. By establishing a smooth progress scheme for renovations while the hotel remained open for business, including conducting on-site surveys of all rooms using 3D scanning (point cloud scanning) and outsourcing various inspections, we were able to complete the work on all rooms within a limited timeframe.
