overview
The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Museum Funeshiru, which opened at Osaka South Port ATC where the ferry "Sunflower" connecting Osaka and Kyushu docks, is a facility created with the desire to let many people encounter the world of ships that support people's daily lives. It is the first museum undertaken by the company, which has a history of over 140 years and is a leader in the shipping industry.
Based on the concept of a museum where people can "see," "touch," and "play" with ships that support our lives, we aimed to create a facility where people of all ages, from children to adults, can learn about how "maritime transport supports people's daily lives" and "ships are constantly evolving" in an enjoyable way.
We created a space and experiences that are approachable and exciting for children, including a large panoramic theater where they can experience the scale of ships and the sea, and interactive displays where they can learn about jobs related to ships and shipping in a fun way. We also added a cafe where they can enjoy original curry, and a shop selling original goods unique to a ship and shipping museum, inspired by a port where "food transported across the sea" gathers.
Issues/requests
- The shipping industry is an essential job in Japan, but there are limited opportunities to learn about it in school and in society, so I would like many Japanese people to feel closer to the shipping industry.
-We want to create a place that will serve as a touch point for ships and the shipping industry.
・By raising awareness of the industry, we hope to use the facility as a PR facility with an eye toward future career education, and to stimulate interest in "ships," "life in shipping," and "jobs related to ships" among preschoolers through elementary school students.
-We also want to attract more visitors to the ferry cruises operated by the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Group.
This was the request.
solution
In Japan, a country surrounded by the sea, over 99% of exports and imports are transported by ships, a mode of transport rarely seen in everyday life.
Our facility aims to be a museum where visitors can "learn" about Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Group's ships, "learn" about shipping starting from ships, "learn" about the jobs involved in shipping, and "learn" about the appeal of all of these. We concept design so that children, who will be the future leaders of the shipping industry, can feel closer to ships and shipping through hands-on experiences.
The museum is designed to immerse visitors in the world of shipping, featuring interactive displays and content tailored to different themes. displays convey the power of ships operating on the world's vast oceans and the present and future of shipping, which supports our lives.
Furthermore, to enhance the museum experience, we leveraged our comprehensive capabilities and worked as a team to create an experience and space that includes original cafe menus, attractive goods that visitors can take home as a memento of their learning, experiential proposals linked to the "Sunflower" ferry docked at ATC, and staff training to deepen communication with visitors.
Customer's voice
displays hall has no partitions whatsoever, creating an open and airy space. concept design, which represents the scale of the shipping industry and the vast blue ocean, has been well-received by visitors. In addition, the cafe and shop at the entrance (free admission) make it easy for passersby to stop by, creating a lively atmosphere.
