overview

A permanent gallery has been newly established in "Jinyamon Plaza," a community gathering place located in "GATE SQUARE Kosugi Jinyacho," a residence in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, to preserve the memories of the land.
"GATE SQUARE Kosugi Jinyacho" is a residential project located on the site of the former main house of the Hara family, which has existed since the Edo period.

Based on the concept of "Passing on the memories of Kosugi to the next generation," we have unraveled the history of the Hara family and Musashi-Kosugi, and created a space that harmonizes with the architecture of the residence, using ukiyo-e motifs.
We are bringing the history that has changed over 400 years into the modern living environment, connecting the memories of this land and the lives of its people to future generations in everyday life. We concept design as a new community space that promotes regional revitalization.

Issues/requests

Up until now, the gallery had been a beloved place for locals, hosting various displays, including historical introductions and art, all handcrafted under the leadership of Hara Management. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its completion, and based on the concept of GATE SQUARE Kosugi Jinyamachi, "Passing on the memories of Kosugi to the next generation," there was a request to renovate the gallery into a permanent displays that would serve as a gathering place for local residents and pass on the history of the area and the aspirations of the Hara family to future generations.

solution

To pique the interest of local residents, we have displayed a variety of historical works, including a cast model of the Hara family's main house that once stood on this site, a diorama depicting life in the Showa era, a three-dimensional timeline incorporating tatebanko (a type of paper craft), and art expressing the memories of the Kosugi area that have continued since the Edo period, all displays through six windows.
Furthermore, by focusing on the Edo period, which marks the beginning of the history of the Hara and Kosugi families, and developing visuals based on ukiyo-e prints, a sense of unity is created throughout the entire space.
As a permanent gallery that receives natural light, concept design incorporates weather-resistant materials such as cast models and ceramic art panels, in addition to its aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, the space is designed to harmonize with the architecture in terms of color and materials, creating an integrated space with the residence.
