overview

The Panasonic Group Pavilion "Nomo's Land" is based on the concept of "Unlock your nature," and is a pavilion that draws out the potential of children through technology that analyzes their sensibilities and experiences that stimulate the five senses. Utilizing the latest technology from Panasonic Holdings, the pavilion achieves a spatial design that harmonizes with the world of "Nomo's Land" by using tiles that evoke the tactile concept design of walking on natural ground, finishes made of natural wood with a metallic texture, and concept design methods that integrate 3D printing. In terms of sustainability, the pavilion incorporates advanced design and construction methods, including the reusability of tiles and biodegradable resin printing, and the spatial and experiential concept design approach is centered on what can be done for the future of children.

Issues/requests

The challenge was to concept design a space that awakens children's senses and sensibilities and unleashes their potential, based on the original story "Nomo's Land." Instead of simply explaining technology and sustainability in displays like manner, the design needed to seamlessly integrate them into the story's world. Furthermore, it required a sustainable design that looked beyond the end of the exhibition.

solution

In response to the abstract challenge of children becoming aware of their own sensibilities and possibilities, we responded to the design by fusing multi-sensory stimulation with technology to create a narrative experience. We sensed experiential behavior, analyzed the "childishness" derived from unconscious movements, and presented a story of the possibility that can be guided as a result. By using the latest technologies such as cross-modal stimulation that combines sound, video, and vibration, flow line design that brings out physicality, and transparent OLED (organic EL display), we have created a new approach for children to feel and realize for themselves by naturally blending into the worldview. In addition, in order to ensure that diverse children can enjoy sensory and physical experiences equally, we conducted workshops from the perspective of DEI* based on the principle of inclusive design (inclusive concept design), which were carefully reflected in the spatial composition, material selection, and experience design.

We are also working on a design-build process based on sustainability and circular economy perspectives.

・In order to avoid excessive decoration and the use of interiors materials, we carefully design the volume and production effect of the space, and direct attention to the center and floor surface, thereby reducing decorative elements on the walls and ceiling and reducing the environmental impact.
・We used computational concept design methods to reduce scraps and intermediate materials generated during the production process. As a specific example, the leaf construction, which is a motif linked to the façade, is designed to be divided into curves that can be processed by general machines to reduce material waste. In addition, the leaf mesh composed of biodegradable resin achieves delicate expression of light and shadow with a highly hollow concept design, while reducing the amount of raw material used, and the finely divisible shape contributes to increasing the surface area, bringing out the biodegradable performance of the material.
We actively employ reusable materials and construction methods. To stimulate the physical sensations underfoot, the bespoke mosaic tiles are construction on a removable base panel that can be dismantled and reused in economical dimensions. In addition, 3D printing is a cyclical concept design with a view to re-pelletizing and converting it to other applications after the displays is completed.

*DEI is an acronym for "Diversity," "Equity," and "Inclusion."
