After extensive research by a former professional soccer player (Tim Brown) and a biotechnology expert (Joey Zwillinger), Allbirds succeeded in developing innovative and sustainable shoes using natural materials such as merino wool, eucalyptus, and sugar cane, and the lifestyle brand Allbirds was born. Founded in San Francisco in 2016, Allbirds arrived in Japan in 2020, and following the Harajuku store, its second store in Japan, the Marunouchi store, opened in June 2021.
As Allbirds' local architect, we supported them from the design stage.
By obtaining the space for two stores, sunlight pours in through the wide glass façade and the interior of the store can be seen from Marunouchi Nakadori, making it an easy place for customers to enter, with a bright and open feel.
There are two entrances, with unique door handles in the shape of large wooden feet, and in the center of the store there is a lineup of T-shirts, loungewear, and performancewear made from natural materials that are gentle on the skin. Shoes are displayed by type according to material and function, and there are cloud-shaped mirrors at the feet and on the walls, as well as solid wood chairs that are angled to make it easier to try on shoes, creating a simple yet playful interior.
[Social issues/customer issues/requests]
Their requests included faithfully recreating the world view of a global brand with around 35 stores around the world, communicating closely with the person in charge in San Francisco, where the brand is based, and being able to handle all work from schematic design stage through to completion all within one company.
[Solution]
We provided comprehensive management, including resolving legal issues related to the design, negotiating with the developer, procuring materials, working drawings, construction, schedule and cost management, and coordinating the import of audio and video systems and fixtures.
In order to respond to Allbirds' request to communicate with the world from Japan in the future, we respect their concept design philosophy of "sustainability" that respects nature and the environment, and are currently considering interiors materials and spatial configurations that correspond to this philosophy for future stores.
