On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, four new permanent displays opened at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan, Director: Chieko Asakawa). This marks the first major renovation in seven years since the large-scale renovation in 2016.
The themes of the new permanent displays are "Robots," "Global Environment," and "Aging." For each of the three themes, visitors will explore ways of confronting and solving various social challenges through displays based on the latest science and technology.
NOMURA Co.,Ltd. was responsible for the design interior execution of the two "Robot" displays spaces and the "Aging" area.

The new "Robots" displays looks ahead to a future where robots will become increasingly integrated into our lives, and explores how we will interact with them. The first displays is "Hello! Robot." Through interactions with communication robots and introductions to the latest robot research, visitors can learn about diverse robot technologies and experience their potential. The second displays is "Nanairo Quest - A Story of the Future Living with Robots," in which visitors take part in a story that unfolds in a future city where humans and robots live together. Using a dedicated tablet, visitors will solve problems that arise in the city, confronting various relationships between humans and robots. At the end, visitors will share diverse values with each other and deepen their understanding.

The new displays, themed around "aging," is called "Aging Park." Through six interactive displays, visitors can experience firsthand the changes in the eyes, ears, motor system, and brain that occur with aging. The exhibition introduces the mechanisms of aging, currently available coping strategies, and support technologies under research and development that may become commonplace in the near future, while encouraging visitors to consider together how to embrace aging and live a fulfilling life.

"Hello! Robot"

displays allows visitors to interact with robots and learn about the latest robotics research, enabling them to imagine a future life with diverse robots and discover new possibilities.

In the robot area, designed for human-robot communication and therapy, visitors can enjoy interacting with robots by touching them and talking to them. The section showcasing the latest robotics research always displays the most cutting-edge research and noteworthy robots. We broadly introduce research through actual robots, aiming to change visitors' perceptions of robots and make them think, "Wow, robots like this exist!"

“Nanairo Quest – A story of the future of living with robots”

Robot technology will continue to develop and will be used in more and more of our everyday lives. How should we interact with robots to help each person live a happy life?

In this displays, you'll explore displays space using a dedicated tablet to solve problems that arise in "Nanairo City," a futuristic town where humans and robots live together. You'll learn about various ways humans and robots interact by using conversations with residents and information about the robots that play an active role in the town as clues. The final destination is an area where you can freely post your impressions and ideas. By leaving your own thoughts and encountering the diverse values left by other visitors, you may gain new insights.

"Old Park"

"Old Park"

As we enter a super-aging society, how should we deal with "old age"? How can science and technology be used to explore ways of living and aging that are rich and unique to oneself and make that a reality?

This displays begins by allowing visitors to experience the aging process that everyone goes through by simulating four easily recognizable signs of aging: the eyes, ears, musculoskeletal system, and brain. It then introduces options for coping with aging from a scientific and technological perspective, including currently understood mechanisms of aging, coping strategies, and support technologies currently under research and development using robotics. By learning about the perspectives of those who are already facing aging, we explore together hints for how each individual can enrich their relationship with aging and live a fulfilling life.
