Seibu Railway's "Toshimaen Station" and "Ikebukuro Station" Renovation
overview
This is a renovation project for Seibu Railway's Toshimaen Station and Ikebukuro Station, coinciding with the opening of "Studio Tour Tokyo (Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter)," which was built on the former site of "Toshimaen" amusement park.
■ Toshimaen Station
Based on the concept of "a station where imagination blends into everyday life," the station building features a simple concept design that evokes a gateway connecting the ordinary and the extraordinary, with added elements that create a magical atmosphere. The pillars on the platform, station signs, and vending machines have been renovated with a predominantly red design reminiscent of "Hogsmeade Station," which leads to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Furthermore, the glass surface at the top of the facade features see-through LEDs that change according to the time of day and season, creating a magical effect that gives a sense of weightlessness.
Furthermore, as a legacy of Toshimaen, which closed in August 2020, model trains, telephone booth sculptures, benches, and sculptures made from trees grown within Toshimaen have been remade and displays according to a new concept, making the station a beloved landmark for the local community.
■ Ikebukuro Station
Inspired by King's Cross Station in London, England, the walls of platforms 1 and 2, where trains to Toshimaen mainly depart and arrive, have been repainted in a brick pattern, and the station signage has also been renovated with a navy blue base color.
Based on the concept of "a path leading to a fantasy world," the station evokes a magical atmosphere by incorporating illustrations of wizards and owls throughout, becoming a gateway to a magical realm.
Issues/requests
■ Toshimaen Station
The client requested that we utilize model trains, benches, and telephone booths that were previously used at "Toshimaen" as photo spots, creating displays that maintains a consistent overall theme while prioritizing safety.
■ Ikebukuro Station
At Ikebukuro Station, which is used by an average of approximately 390,000 people daily, concept design required ensuring safety and visibility while also emphasizing a consistent overall aesthetic.
solution
■ Toshimaen Station
To make the most of the legacy of "Toshimaen," we created a story and presentation that matched the magical world, resulting in displays that can be enjoyed not only by visitors to "Studio Tour Tokyo" but also by local residents.
■ Ikebukuro Station
We held numerous discussions with Seibu Railway regarding safety and visibility, and through repeated on-site full-scale verifications and sample checks, we were able to bring the design to fruition.
