Tokyo National Museum Heiseikan Special Exhibition “Todaiji Great Buddha – Treasure of Tenpyo”
overview
We presented the essence of Tenpyo culture through works related to the construction of the Great Buddha. The octagonal lantern (National Treasure), which stands over 4.5 meters tall in front of the Great Buddha Hall, was publicly displayed outside the temple for the first time. In addition, we displays a collection of Tenpyo treasures, including the standing statue of the infant Buddha (National Treasure), known as the largest ancient statue of the infant Buddha in Japan, and the Gigaku masks (Important Cultural Property) used in the eye-opening ceremony of the Great Buddha. Furthermore, we introduced the history of Todai-ji Temple, which has been passed down through generations, through masterpieces of portrait sculptures of the monks Chogen and Kokei, who restored the Great Buddha during the Kamakura and Edo periods.
